Part-Filipino Michael Soy drops record 54 points, then wins local Vietnam tourney, MVP
Filipino-Canadian Michael Soy is continuing to build a strong case for the PBA draft — if he chooses that path as his next career move.
Soy dropped 54 points during an elimination round game in the Saigon Pro-Am Basketball Cup 2024 earlier this week, when his AIP Dreamers squad blew out XCE, 143–75.
The playmaker scored all of his points from beyond the three-point line, making a Vietnam Pro-Am Basketball Championship (VBC) record 18 triples in the process. He also finished with six rebounds and five assists.
The Dreamers would eventually sweep the tournament, beating Tan Binh Basketball in the quarterfinals, Phu Tho 3F in the semifinals, and Stefan Nguyen Next Level Basketball in the final.
Soy would also be named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, capping an impressive week.
The Saigon Cup is part of the VBC’s annual circuit, when the Vietnam Basketball Association (VBA), the country’s professional hoops league, is in its off-season.
The 6-foot Soy averaged 16.8 points on a 35.3-percent clip from three-point land, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals for the Cantho Catfish in the last VBA season.
Also part Vietnamese through his father, Soy has been establishing a connection to the Philippine basketball network since last year.
He briefly worked out for 3x3 side MCFASolver Tech Centrale and Banh Mi Kitchen under coach Anton Altamirano before returning to Vietnam. He also actively plays in regional 3x3 leagues across Southeast and East Asia.
The 27-year-old has also been getting feelers to join bigger leagues in either Japan or South Korea as a heritage import.
